Props

The yoga props required for each Yoga Series are noted in the description prior to purchase. If you don’t already own these props you can purchase them or alternatively here is a list of some alternative items you can find lying around your house to substitute.

Yoga Mat - Some of my online Yoga Series’ don’t require a Yoga Mat such as ‘Rest & Restore’ or ‘Just Savasana’. If a Yoga mat isn’t required this will be mentioned in the class description. In these cases, you may practise on a clean floor rug/carpet and potentially put down an additional blanket for extra padding/comfort.

If you want to purchase a high quality yoga mat, here are my (personally tried + tested) recommendations:

Second Earth (Australia) - The ‘Connected’ Yoga Mat is absolutely non slip, completely natural and durable. This is the most eco-friendly, non-toxic and sustainable yoga mat I have come across. It also comes with a carry strap to make it easy for you to roll it up, store or take it with you.

JADE (Fusion) - If you want a super thick yoga mat for extra comfort the best option on the market is the JADE Fusion 8mm Yoga Mat. The Australia stockist for this product is EMP. For other countries, see the Jade Yoga website to view this mat and their full range (which are all great!). A very thick yoga mat is ideal for those who experience sensitivity/pain in their knees when kneeling or in a lunge position, or if you simply only ever want to practice restorative yoga predominately laying or sitting on the floor. Please be aware that the thicker the mat, the heavier it is! This means, it’s not ideal if you want to take your mat from one house to another, or to a yoga studio or for travelling.

Yoga Blocks - Blocks are used to ‘bring the earth’ closer to you, during a yoga class. They can offer you more stability and support. If you don’t have any yoga blocks at home, you could use thick books (or a pile of books), or a sturdy container/box.

If you want to purchase a yoga block, here is my favourite:

ARPI ‘The Block’ - it’s my favourite because its light, non slip and non-toxic.

Yoga Strap - It’s really easy to substitute a yoga strap for something at home. You could use a dressing gown belt, a waist belt or any other type of thick rope. Depending on the length you’re requiring from the belt, you could also a tea towel.

If you want to purchase your own yoga strap, this is my recommendation:

Calm Buddha - This sturdy and soft cotton strap is affordable, beautiful and comes in 7 colours.

Yoga Bolster - You can substitute a bolster with pillows and/or cushions. Generally firmer pillows and cushions are best as they provide more support, however you can decide what’s best as you move through each class and different posture.

If you want to purchase your own yoga bolster, this is my recommendation:

Injuries

If you are seeing a specialist in relation to your injury, it is best to seek guidance from them to determine whether slow gentle yoga is a suitable option. Although I do offer variations of postures throughout the classes, my suggestion is to listen to your body as you move through each practice, each day. If something feels painful, stop. Try a slightly different angle or shape, or leave it out all together. If you would like to get in contact with me to see if particular classes may be suitable to you and your unique situation with your health, please do so. My intention and hope is that I have classes available that are accessible to majority of people. To get in touch you can reply directly to any of the emails you’ve received from me (even the automated ones). Alternatively, my email is: hello@melissamai.com.au
